Evaluation

Evaluation

The assignment brief was to create a piece of work that shows what we have learnt this year. I choose to create a piece of work using my graphics skills.

The topic I choose was global warming because I have some knowledge from school about global warming and I had a good idea on how I could present it ( Info graphic ).

When doing my research I looked at a lot of websites, through these websites I found out how global warming is effecting the planet, for example. The main cause of global warming is pollution this causes the O zone layer to weaken. The O zone is a layer of our atmosphere that absorbs some of the rays from the sun that heats up the planet but not that much that it melts the ice caps but with the mass amount of pollution were producing now is weakening the O zone layer which is letting in to much of the suns rays which heats up the planet causing floods in coastal areas from the icecaps melting and causing droughts in places like Africa and Australia because there already hot and with the increase heat it delays the rain fall so crops are to dry to grow and die so the crops do not grow but some places like the UK get to much rain, The wheat needs sun to grow the water grows it to where its green but it needs the sun to dry it up and make it yellow. I also researched some charity's that help with global warming one that stood out was Greenpeace because they show on their website how it effects everything from animals to humans they also show how you can slow down global warming and how you can reduce your carbon foot print with everyday things like getting from place to place (using a bus because a bus with 2 people on is less pollution then 2 cars on the road) and turning lights off. I also found out from Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions that China, US and India are the biggest contributors to pollution and that China produced 10,540,000 kt of co2 out of 35,669,000 kt of co2 that was produced by the rest of the world

I couldn't find the name of the artist that inspired me but when I was searching on Google 'Info graphic designs' I was only finding short info graphics so I was not that confident that a short info graphic was enough work, but I found one where it was a long info graphic and I then new that an info graphic can be long and still be simple like the smaller ones.

How I made it

Process:

1) I started off adding a background colour to start off, with plans of changing it in the future but I really liked it so decided to keep it. Then I made my first page by starting off with Global warming at the top in a green font colour to go with the global warming theme which I then carried on to explain the meaning of global warming. I then showed some of the UKs power sources ( wind power, solar power and water power ) I show 3 environment friendly power sources and then compare that to a more common damaging power source to show that we depend on more harmful power sources like nuclear power for energy. All of this is made on power point like the windmill, the sun, the water drop and even the power plant with CO2 clouds, However the nuclear symbol was not made on power point but is the hazard symbol for radiation so is not copyrighted because its a world known sign for something being radioactive. Also the pie charts I used where also made on power point.

2) I then started on making just quick fire tips on how you can reduce your carbon footprint, The amount of carbon you contribute to the atmosphere is the size of your carbon footprint, so more carbon the bigger the footprint. I did this by adding the green title ''HOW YOU CAN REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT:'' to keep with the theme ( having the titles in caps and green ) the getting some hexagons and rotating them to face up so they could slot into each other, I also changed the colour of the hexagons to make it less bland and then tried to get the right colour for each one eg plant a tree is green because the trees are green but I couldn't think of a colour for ride a bike, idling in your car and using a cloth line.

3) I then added a WHAT YOU CAN RECYCLE part to my info graphic then I added a but recycle bin is off google images and im not sure if I can use it, I then added a list of what you can recycle with will also help you reduce your carbon footprint.
4) For this one Its about HOW GLOBAL WARMING IS EFFECTING THE PLANET: and I talk about how the temperature is rising and how that effects the poles and how that will effect us, There is also a quote from an article from NASA which is concerning and will keep the readers attention. I also made an earth ice cream with a penguin on top to remind the reader that the ice caps can melt just like ice cream can melt and the penguin is there to show the effect on the wildlife as well because if the earth cream melts the penguin's will go extinct just like polar bears and other animals that depend on the poles for food or habitat.

5) This part of my info graphic is where I explain how CO2  ( carbon dioxide ) is effecting the atmosphere and how CO2 is causing global warming. I also used the circle shape in power point to make the chemical symbol for co2. I also added a lightning bolt I got of the shapes in power point. I also kept the same font and size and colour for the title to keep it consistent.

6) On this part of my info graphic I show how deforestation is effecting the amount of CO2 being released into the atmosphere, I also used before and after pictures that I made from the shapes on power point and I also got an image of a banner I got of Google. On the before I show a forest with clear skies but on the before I show thick smoke clouds and power plants and roads, so it shows something that will keep CO2 emissions balanced, to something that will overflow the CO2 in the atmosphere.

7) On my last one I show a few of the many hundreds of organisations that help prevent global warming (Honor the Earth, Greenpeace and WWF) I also show a green hill with some trees on to show that these charities will stop deforestation and the there will be more trees so less carbon dioxide.

8) I Then was asking my self how I could improve my work, then I saw that I haven't shown any Photoshop work so I went on Photoshop and recreated the clouds and trees but I didn't want them looking to detailed so to keep with my simple design so I just recreated them with more sharper colours and this way it was my own cloud and not a pre made one on power point. I did the same thing with the top of the trees, I made the black part on the clouds a dark green and the white bit a bright green.

- one I used for the trees in my info graphic.

I made these by using Ellipse tool to draw my circles, for the cloud I used white circles with a larger black one behind it and for the green I used lighter green than the larger one behind it.

9) When I took my cloud of Photoshop and saved it as an image I tried to put it on Photoshop but it had a massive white background behind it that I couldn't get rid of with 'set transparent colour' because normally that get rid of but instead I used ' remove background ' but that still got rid of the white in cloud so I used mark areas to keep tool and kept drawing lines which kept the white inside the cloud.

10) As you can see I have used accurate  percentages to show the 18%. I used the same method to to get the others at 15%.

- how I got 18% on the graph.

Inspiration

When I started on my fmp I made a few templates of what I imagined it to look but then I started to to try and find a longer info graphic because I got down everything I knew and all my research on my info graphic but it wasn't very long and looked more like a poster and this image on the left helped me because I thought an info graphic couldn't be very long but I felt like I hadn't done enough work and wanted to do more and this inspired me to do more because I new that it could be long and still look professional
